Another new group started in 2014 was the Knit-Wits – a knit and natter for charity group. Many of us enjoy knitting and invariably have wool left over, times when you have knitted so much that you have run out of projects and could stock a shop with the number of knitted items that you have created. The aim of the group is to support a charity (or charities) with our knitted creations.
As their first project in 2014 the group knitted many teddy bears, baby hats and coats and cot blankets for the Greenfields Africa ‘Mama Bag’ project. The bags are used as incentives for mothers-to-be to attend antenatal services, thus helping the fight against AIDS, TB and infant mortality. They are distributed direct to the poorest families in the remotest areas of Uganda and Kenya.
Since then they have knitted woolly hats for seamen, baby items for Cynthia Spencer Hospice shop and for the St. Martins baby bath scheme to help local mums in Davetry area who are struggling. They have also knitted and crocheted ‘twiddle’ muffs for the local hospitals and care homes, blankets for sale in the local Air Ambuance shop, ‘memory’ blankets for palliative care patients at Rugby St. Cross and baby pockets and blankets for SANDS.
They regularly knit popppies to decorate St. Mary’s Church, Badby and in 2019 decorated the WI Centenary bench on the village green. 2019 also saw them knit Forgt-me-Knots for a Cynthia Spencer Hospice display at Castle Ashby.
