Friday 16th January AGM followed by Balncanieves (2012)
Snow White and the 7 dwarves, but not as you know it : live action with bullfighters in 1920’s Saville, a black and white silent film. Spanish intertitles and English subtitles. A free screening, but only members will be admitted.

Thursday 29th January  Shadowlands (1993)
Richard Attenborough’s biopic about the author & Oxford academic C S Lewis (played by Anthony Hopkins)n and his dying wife (Debra Winger) : a classic “tear-jerker”. It won BAFTA’s for Best Film and Best Actor for Hopkins.

Friday 30th January  Sunshine on Leith (20103)
Rom-com set near Edinburgh and featuring the songs of Scottish pop-folk band The Proclaimers, adapted from the stage hit musical of the same name.

Saturday 14th February Donizetti’s L’Elisir D’Amore (2005)
As a Valentine’s Day treat, our ‘Supper at the Opera‘ series brings Otto Schenk’s interpretation of this well-loved opera, starring Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon on the Vienna Staatsoper stage. Italian, with subtitles.

Thursday 26th February Fitzcarraldo (1982)
Werner Herzog’s epic stars Klaus Kinski as a Peruvian rubber baron who transports a 320-ton steamship over a steep hill. German, with subtitles.

Friday 27th February   Master and Commander (2003)
Blockbuster from Peter Weir, starring Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany in a Napoleonic historical drama of naval derring-do. It won 4 BAFTAs and 2 Oscars. It’ll look and sound great on our 5-metre screen!

Thursday 26th March  Wadjda (2012)
BAFTA-nominated Saudi-Arabian film about a girl signing on for a Koran recitation competition in order to buy a bicycle. Arabic, with subtitles.

Friday 27th March  Persuasion (1995)
BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, shot in Lyme Regis and Bath, starring Amanda Root, Ciaran Hinds, Susan Fleetwood and Corin Redgrave.

Thursday 23rd April  Tracks (2013)
Adaptation of Robyn Davidson’s memoir of a 9-month journey on 4 camels with her dog, across 1,700 miles of Australian desert to the Indian Ocean.

Friday 24th April  The Hundred Foot Journey (2014)
Lasse Hallstrom’s comedy starring Helen Mirren and Om Puri is “a sweet and unapologetic fairy tale for adults”. It tells the story of a feud between two adjacent restaurants in Southern France: one French, the other Indian.

Friday 29th May  Jersey Boys (2014)
Documentary-style jukebox musical dramatizing the formation, success and eventual break-up of the 1960s rock’n’roll group The Four Seasons.

Saturday 13th June  Verdi’s Otelllo (1968)
Our “Supper at the Opera” series continues with Franco Zeffirelli’s film version of this dramatic opera, shot on location in Italy. It stars Katia Riciarelli & Placido Domingo, conducted by Lorin Maazel. Opera-loving B&DFS members voted it in their Opera ‘Top 10’. Italian, with subtitles.

Friday 26th June  The Producers (1968)
A satirical dark comedy cult classic from director Mel Brooks. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder try unsuccessfully to produce a sure-fire Broadway flop.

Friday 31st July  Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
David lean’s 4-hour epic starring peter O’Toole is “one of the greatest & most influential films in the history of cinema”. See it on the big screen!
