We’ve had bullfinches on our feeders throughout the summer this year. This has never happened so regularly before. Initially it was predominantly males, up to three at a time, with their bright red breast plumage. Occasionally a female would be present with much duller plumage. In the last two weeks, we’ve seen a young bullfinch as well. This can be recognised by its grey-brown head rather than the black crown and face of adult birds.
Few migrant birds remain except for late nesting house martins and chiffchaffs quietly calling from cover.
