St Mary’s Church Pew Platforms Project – Progress report #2

Monday Jan 22: Last surplus pew moved to belfry temporarily.  Concrete in SW aisle dug to provide channel to air vent.  Chamber found and cleared within the wall and channel under aisle into CW pew platform pit dug and re-instated. Archaeologist Tim in attendance.

Tuesday: Boarding to SE and CW pew platforms loosened.  SE air vents revealed and cleared.

Wednesday: Last surplus pew collected for purchaser.  Archaeologist in attendance.  Excavation for new font foundation completed. Small item found and original floor about 18 in. down with mortar indicating probably tiled.

Flag stones in north aisle by the vestry raised and old flue route investigated and photo shows the investigation and installation for a new duct for new electric cables through from under the vestry floor into the space below the NE pew platform .  One tile, possibly pre-Victorian, was found.

Architect advised the re-use of sound  joists from the back platforms to replace rotted ones in the SE corner.

Thursday & Friday: Flag stones replaced and grouted.  Shuttering, drain pipe installed and concrete for new foundation for font completed. Electrician installed time clocks and is starting on the switch panels.
