Badby bird notes for March –

The rain has finally stopped and spring is on the way. This time last year we were still in the midst of winter but so far this has been more like 2012 with dogs mercury out well before the end of February and butterflies on the wing early in March. I’ve already seen brimstone, peacock, small tortoiseshell and comma. There have still been a few fieldfares around this month but there’s now an occasional skylark singing over the fields and yellowhammer, chaffinch and mistle thrush have joined the chorus of song.  I’ve also already heard a chiffchaff singing in the village – my earliest spring record of one.  RP
